Theater Arts in the Kingdom of Belgium


Last time, I presented to you the actors, actresses, directors and playwright that contributed in the Philippine theater arts. Let me share to you the people behind Belgium's theater industry.

Kingdom of Belgium is a federal state in Western Europe.A lot of Belgians contributed on theater. Some of them are: 


  •  Berthe Bovy or Betty Bovy- an actress who appeared on theater, films and television for more than 60 years. 









  •  Ludovica "Louisa" Ghijs- an actress and pianist. She was also an actress daughter named Nicole and an actress grand daughter named Saskia Fischer.



  • Tone Brulin -a playwright, stage director and a drama teacher from Belgium. He became the first TV director for Drama at the Belgian Radio and Television Flemish Service in Brussels.Tone Brulin was a  co-founder of the avant-garde literary magazines Tijd en Mens and had published volumes of short stories.Some of his works have been translated and published in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Malay, Norwegian, Russian, Hungarian, Romanian, Serbo-Croat and seen at world festivals like the Festival of Caracas,the Festival of Lisbon, the Holland Festival, the Edingburough Fringe, the Nancy Festival, St. Andrews, Bochum, Hong Kong, Grahamstown and Erlangen Festivals.


  •  Cyrillus Gustave Emile "Cyriel", Baron Buysse - a Flemish naturalist author and playwright.Even if he had been educated in French, most of his works are in Dutch. His writings are characterized by the sympathy of a common man whose life he widely described. He is also the co-editor of  the literary periodical Van Nu en Straks (On Now and Soon) and he left it soon because of arguments with co-editor. He also wrote a novel entitled Het recht van den sterkste (The Law of the Jungle).


  •  Fernand Crommelynck -  a Belgian dramatist and was born in a family of actors. Some of his works are  
  1. Le Sculpteur des masques (1908)\ 
  2. L'Histoire de Minna Claessens (Alfred Machin, 1912)
  3. L'agent Rigolo et son chien policier (Alfred Machin, 1912)
  4. Le Marchand de regrets (1913)

  • Michel de Ghelderode- he was born as Adhémar-Adolphe-Louis Martens. He was a Belgian dramatist who writes in French. He is a prolific writer and wrote more than sixty plays, a hundred stories, a number of articles on art and folklore in more than 20,000 letters. Most of his works are somehow based on horror or suspense theme. These include stories about mannequins, puppets, devils, masks, religious paraphernalia, and mysterious old women. 

  • Alfred Hennequin- a Belgian dramatist who had a successful career in writing comedies.  He is an engineer but he chose the field in theater because of his knowledge and passion  in the art of writing. He also had a streetcar company while pursuing his theatrical career but he abandoned his industrial career in order to focus exclusively on the stage. His son Charles-Maurice is also a playwright.




  •  René Kalisky- a writer of Polish descent and has wrote plays for the last twelve years of his life. His father was killed during the World War II and from there, his works(journals, essays and plays) are based on issues that were often questioning history, ethics, and furthermore with the human spirit and intimacy in relationships.





  •  Suzanne, Baroness Lilar -  a Flemish, Belgian essayist and playwright writing in French. She is the mother of a writer named Françoise Mallet-Joris. She started as a journalist reporting on a newspaper in Spain and later became a playwright myth and another two more plays.






  •  Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck- a Belgian playwright, poet and essayist who wrote in French. His works are based on death and the meaning of life. He also wrote a series of symbolist plays characterized by fatalism and mysticism. 



  

  •  Jaco Van Dormael - a Belgian film director, screenwriter and playwright. His films are especially noted for people who are mental and physical disable. This is his way of respecting people like them.







  • Félix Marie Henri Tilkin commonly known as Ivan Caryll was a Belgian composer of opera and musical comedies in the English language. His first great successes were made in light musical comedies. T first, he is teaching music lessons to women in the suburbs and later sold some songs. This is the start of the career of Ivan.



These are just few of the people that excel  in the theater industry in Belgium. I may have forgotten someone, so feel free to share them with me. Thanks!
